Great thread! I'm getting ready to do a new build as well. The MOBO you selected is compatible with 4 ×240pin DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 memory. Why did you go with 1600 and not 1866 or 2133?

What I meant to say is....What is the difference between DDR 2133/1866 and 1600?
Also, There is a comparable ASUS board ASUS P9X79 LE LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS that can utilize 64Gb of memory. First, I don't believe I'd ever expand to 64Gb of memory for the size of projects I develop. That being said..... Does it matter whether or not you only utilize 4 slots when 8 are available if you are using 4x4 sticks of memory?

First answer: The higher the number, the faster the RAM. Faster is better.

Second answer: Four sticks of RAM in four slots will be all you need to take advantage of four channel RAM.

Would this version of the Gigabyte board work?

I want to access more than 32GB of ram for samples using Vienna Ensemble Pro

I would expect any x79 motherboard to work well enough, so get a mobo with the features you need. Not sure if you will reap the benefit of 64GB of RAM just yet, but it would be "future proof"

Agree with TOM@METRO on RAM, but if you have 8 slots, use the proper 4 slots if you install 4 sticks(usually the same color slots).

mobo and features look good...definitely should work. make sure you use UEFI bios in compatibility mode tho. UEFI mode results in your OS drive bein' config'd as a GUID formatted partition as opposed to a MBR format...still workable/useable but drive letter will NOT show up under computer view...but it will show in disk management...took me a minute to trouble-shoot that one. i'm usin' the ASUS Sabertooth X79. gettin' ready to add another 16gb of ram...32gb total. VEPro will LUV the 64gb. but i hope you will be usin' PTHD 10 or PT10 w/CPTK with disk cache. otherwise you will run into the 4gb 32bit app ram limit for your audio files in PT10. disk cache allows you to avoid the ceiling

finally tested my system...config'd to 3.625MHz...cpu multiplier 29 - bus speed 100 - BCLK 125 - ram underclocked to 2000 (2133 is spec) turbospeed off

results...550 dverbs (1024 buffer, 11 procs, 99%, 24/48 session)

FWIW...just tested same config with HT OFF...5 of 6 procs @99%

results...370 dverbs... HT ON seems to win this battle
