Need to transfer old Tech to New

Hi folks- I realize this is way "out of the box" and ancient history to many of you but.. I have a huge amount of audio archived on DAT and need to get it on to my computer for marketing to radio stations, etc.

My Sony PCM-R300 DAT machine worked well until I let it sit idle for several months. Now, when I insert a cassette the machine starts “searching,” going forward and backwards in 3 second cycles and then finally stops and indicates it's ready to play a track. However, if I push “play” the same back and forth searching starts again.

If I push the “record” button though, the machine will respond to the “play” button and start recording. I can listen to tracks recorded with my hand-held Sony “Walkman” DAT player and they sound fine. (using the Walkman to dub this material to my computer would be very clumsy)

I have a cleaning cassette and have run it twice with no good result.

it sounds like it needs more than a cleaning, probably a head adjustment

can you borrow one? or worst case rent one

I agree. I needed to do a bunch of transfers and just shopped locally and found a mint DA20 for $100
