hmm unfortunately it wasn't as plain sailing as that, and I had to do it the hard way round. So if anyone else comes across the problem I did with a 2008 harpertown processor 8 core mac pro, then you now know what to do.

I had this problem, and solved it by going back from 10.6.8 to 10.6.7. It was with PT 10.0.0

The card should be placed in slot 2 in harpertown machines.

With 10.0.1 and 10.7.3 it went smoothly.

I was planning on updating to 10.1.1 soon, what exactly do I need to do in order to avoid any issues? Run the flasher from 10.6.8? 10.6.3? Or will 10.7.2 work fine? Or should I updated to 10.7.3 first, and then use the flasher from there?

10.7.3 and 10.1.1 native card on slot 2 worked perfectly here. same mac pro as yours (2008 harpertown).

wow, I'm so glad I haven't updated!
I'm so impressed Avid would have the nerve to charge SO much for this update to 10, then let issues like this go on, and then not see one post from tech support on this thread...

Now I'm kinda wishing I went to Apogee instead of buying the HD Omni.

sorry for being ot but I've been waiting to update because I feared this sort of thing.

It's not that difficult to update the firmware, although it's a bit time consuming. I made a temporary partition, then installed MacOSX 10.6.7 and PT9 on it. Then I booted from the new partition and updated the firmware. Once the firmware was successfully updated, I rebooted from my original system and wiped the temporary partition. No problems, just a boring afternoon.
