Default Digi 003 "Unable to locate digidesign hardware" - Broken Firewire?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to troubleshoot some problems with a Digi 003 that has recently stopped working after about a year of working without issue. I'm running it with a MacBook Pro (2008) and Pro Tools 8 LE. When I start Pro Tools, I get the "Unable to locate digidesign hardware" error message in spite of restarting my computer and powering on the 003 before starting Pro Tools.

I've also tried using 2 different firewire cables (about 6' & 20' long). Regardless, Pro Tools (and the DigiCore Audio Manager & my Audio/MIDI settings) cannot see the Digi 003. I've tried updating Pro Tools to the most recent version, trashing digidesign databases & reinstalling the firmware. Installing the firmware did not work---after holding down Aux7-8 + Mute & opening Pro Tools, I still got a message indicating that the hardware was not connected.

I've also tested my system using my Mbox (USB 2.0). It was able to open up Pro Tools without any issues.

Based on all of this, I suspect that the Firewire connector on the 003 has gone bad. I don't think it's the MacBook Pro, since the firewire ports on the MacBook work fine with external hard drives & my Focusrite audio interface. Can anyone confirm/deny my suspicions and tell me what my next step should be in order to get the Digi 003 working again?

Does the firewire-led light up? Can you find the 003 in the mac audio-midi-setup?

I can't find the Digi 003 in audio/midi setup & the firewire light on the front panel is off. However, the link light on the back is on.

I am having a similar problem with a 002-Mixer and a iMac. Normally I run a Mbox with it using USB. But I wanted to have more inputs so I tried using my 002 with a Firewire cable. I get the "Unable to locate digidesign hardware" thing alot and it generally locks up the whole system alot. I have no problem running the Mbox tho...
What is this?

Is anyone able to help me diagnose whether this is a software issue or a hardware issue? I'm still completely stuck.

I dont think it has anything to do with the power harness. If I take that same 002 and firewire and try to use it on a MacPro it works fine.

Does anyone have any advice about my problem at all? I'd hate to take this to a dealer to fix only to find that it's a software issue I could have diagnosed. Please help me figure out if I have a hardware or software issue.

Go to your Mac HD/library/Audio/Midi Drivers folder and make sure there are 2 drivers in there named:
DigidesignFireWireMIDI.plugin
DigiDioMidiDriver.plugin
