Default Hardware Insert Issue

I want to insert a rack unit on a channel in PT9.

Is there a way to set it up in the i/o window to send out of one output (lets say output 5) and come back on an input with a different number (lets say input 3).
I make a new insert but i can only pick from the outputs and the input automatically links to the same number.[bleep]

I know I could use a aux track with a bus, but if i use a "send" instead of an "insert" I wont be able to get the delay comp that's needed to run it in my mix.

Thoughts?
Thanks

Inserts must use a matched set. If you want to use un-matched IO, just return the processed signal to its own audio track, and then nudge it into perfect timing by using the original track as a reference.

Hmmm well that sucks.

Is there a reason why it has to be matched? Or is it just because that's what they want.

Seems like a small thing to add to help people route the way they want. The IO window is such a great tool except for that.

Why does it suck? Why can't you use a matched set of IO? Why not simply record the returning audio and nudge it? Any of these options get the job done What is your setup?(maybe someone can offer an option we haven't thought of)

I think that's maybe a good guess. In any case, if we can get a clear picture of what the goal is, someone may have an idea to help(I wasn't meaning to sound snarky with all the questions, just trying to get a clear idea of what you need and why)

That is the fact... but it would be nice to be able to "map" it, kinda like we can with outputs/busses apres PT8 or 9. ff

My issue was not being able to use inputs 1-2 because my monitors were hooked into out 1-2.

But i had a "A-HA!!" moment in the shower (where all great thinking happens) and i realized that i can hook my monitors up to out 5-6 since my Saffire Pro 24 has no 5-6 input.

I still think you should be able to map the in and out of an insert any way you want... but thats besides the point now.

Thanks for the feed back guys.
