Default Head Room

Hey, I recently got a Digi001, i'm happy with the quality or the recordings...but not with the over all volume of everything when i'm done. Can you guys give me some pointers on how to get more power/levels out of my recordings? (so some one won't have to crank they're sterio for it to sound decent)

thanks!,

-Travis

This has absolutely nothing to do with the Digi 001. This is a common problem to any recording. I don't know if you've ever been to a professinoal recording studio, but you'll find that even your tapes/CDs from there with have a weak signal.

The solution to this is, of course, mastering. Preparing the material for it's destination medium to ensure the best quality and signal/noise ratio.

If you're not interested in full-out mastering of your material, simply invest in a brick wall limiter and you'll be happy as cheese. Insert the limiter on your master fader (they're not cheap, the best one's right now for LE are either the Waves L1, or digidesign's Maxim) and adjust to taste. There should be a few presets to help you out. Listen carefully, because what you're really doing is cutting off the spikes in your signal so that your overall levels can be raised without clipping. There will be a point where you will hear severe audio degredation. This will solve your problem if used correctly, however.

Good luck!

There is a plug in you can use to add gain to your tracks after they are recorded. Go to Audio Suite and it is right there you can boost your volume there. Going as hot as possible to disk is a suggestion as well.

Try the 'MAXIM' plug-in demo on the PTLE cd
