You can only use the pencil tool when you're zoomed in pretty far..

Note that the pencil tool is destructive,.. If you want to draw a change you may want to first consolidate around the aea first.

Pencil is "NOT" destructive. I have used it many times an then hit "undo" because I didn't like the result. Maybe there is an option somewhere to make it non or destructive. Hmmmmm

Try searching the "answerbase" 307. I just looked in Pro Tools to see if there was an option to turn pencil on or off and there isn't. As far as I know it should just work. You have to be really far in (to where the wave form is just a wavy line) and then click the pencil buttin then click and drag on the wave form to pencil edit it. Good luck:)

If you are using the pencil it is indeed destructable. But you still have your undo's. But this is one of the actions in protools that actually happens to the original file, unlike stuff like crossfading, chopping off some stuff, audiosuite etc.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Set the Paging File Initial Size to 1065 or lower in Virtual Memory. 1024 is the recommended value.

To set this, go to:
SystemProperties>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Adv anced>Virtual Memory>Change

Or remove some of your RAM, so you have less than 1GB
I changed my paging file min and max to 1024, and it worked (on a TDM system)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">From Digi's answerbase:

"Regardless of my zoom level or session length, I have lost the functionality of my Pencil Tool.

This error was seen in systems containing 1GB RAM. Reducing the amount of RAM to 512MB resolved the error. "

Changing the paging file size worked for me. Didn't wanna reduce my amount of RAM. That was the most stupid solution i've ever heard from Digi!
