Just fyi.
Keep in mind that most "computer stores" don't deal with DAW's especially the most picky and sensitive one we call Pro Tools. Were the returns because PT didnt work on them...or something else?

I think the Asus Revolution might take most of your $600 budget from you.

hey guys!!

I am waiting for my i7 parts to arrive this week, but I had a question about the power supply. I am planning on using my current psu that has 550watts. I keep seeing builds with more watts and wonder if I will have to upgrade or I will be just fine with my current one.
here is the link to it:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...p?Sku=ULT31851

I am also using my old video card here:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?Sku=E145-5192

I ordered the gygabite motherboard the entry level X58 and 6gb of RAM at 1333. I will have only one dvd burner. Nothing fancy.

Thoughts?

Thanks

PSU seems fine, it's specs indicate its definatly able to supply the amout of juice you need.

actually the psu has a 4 pin 12v, the board needs an 8 pin 12v connector.

Thanks man.
I think I discovered my own questions/answers. It seems my PCI-X cards will go into a PCI standard, however they will down grade to match the PCI speeds. (I used to have a Mac G5-with PCI-X slots exclusively.) Looking to upgrade to PC now though. And of course want the latest and greatest....

For the record I was looking for an i7 build with PCI-E and PCI-X architectures on the same system. I thought you guys might be the ones to hit up for info after writing so much on the subject.

Sorry to dilute the content of this thread.. not my intent... just wanted to discuss an i7 build with dual architectures and if it is available as described above.

Shane, that board I linked to on New Egg has 2 Nehalem processor sockets. Which from what I have read are supposed to be slightly altered i7's. It seems that I was reading your post somewhere that in terms of software responsive-ness, that you don't get that big of a bump in efficiency with 8-cores and were going to wait for the Phenom (amd) to be released because of how the memory is used.

What are your thoughts on the memory in the one I linked to? Can you elaborate on the memory usage between Dual processors?

They are redundant connections and it should work fine with just the 4 pin. Same goes for the 20 pin Vs the 24 pin ATX connector. That been my experience at least.

Hey guys,

I just saw this "double shell shocker deal" ad come in from newegg, and noticed that 30gig solid state drives are down to about $120. Obviously we still have a way to go until we have 300 - 500 gig ssd's that are "audio drive" worthy. But it just got me wondering what the best way to utilize a drive like this would be in these DAW's. "temporary" audio drive? Sample drive for stuff like BFD?

Any thoughts?

Does anybody know of a utility to indicate video card temperature as a tray icon or similar? I already have one for the hard disks and Coretemp for the CPU. Now that my i7 machine is working, I need to start slowing down the fans to get the machine quieter (without overheating anything).

Oh no!! well.. apparently I have an 8 pin connector but what is the EPS..?

This is what I have available on the PSU for the Gygabite.

* 1x 20/24-Pin Motherboard Connector
* 1x 4-Pin +12V Motherboard Connector
* 1x 8-Pin EPS Motherboard Power Cable

Any hope? Or I have to shell out more for a PSU now.. ?
