Yes, how dare they make it affordable!!

But, then that doesn't fit into the anti-Apple narrative.

Wow more than a 4 year old thread and we pick up right where we left off, arguing about Apple and Windows....

Some days I don’t believe there is hope for humanity

yeah, who knows what it will and will not have.

PCIe is a long shot for sure. I'll sort it all out when the time comes. Hopefully UA will have put out their next gen tech by then as well since their plugs have become indispensable.

Default We need a Thunderbolt HDX system

If the new Mac Pro does not have a healthy number of PCIe slots look for police reports of a protester defacing Apple HQ....

Now Apple have dragged this whole mess out long enough that by the time they do something PCIe4 will be here... (it’s already running in the lab/demo systems).

You're correct that it's primarily Intel's tech, but it was developed in conjunction with Apple and it's Apple's name. Intel called it Lightpeak.

Yes , you are correct apple was Intel's proving ground that it could be done.
They very much was instrumental in the software driver development.
I personally love thunderbolt now that i can run it on windows machine.
Its blazing fast even when tracking with a moderate amount of processing .

Forgive my late entrance to the party:

I'd like to move from PT10 HD6 Magma to HDX with a new machine, either iMac or current Mac Pro model. Thing is, I'd like two HDX cards and continue to use the two UAD Octo cards we use now, making 4 slots total.

Is it reasonable to use two Magma 3-slot chassis, connected by Thunderbolt 3, to generate the 4th slot? Magma, or whatever the current company name is, tells me that daisy chaining two of their 3-slot boxes is OK.

Anyone using an iMac with the Magma chassis? Can anyone comment on having two HDX cards coexist with UAD in such a chassis? Anybody use two Magma boxes? Daisy chained, if so?

Thanks for any input.

I have two pals up here that are running multiple Sonnet Echo Express3 boxes - one for HDX Card(s), and one for multiple UAD Octo PCIe cards, and they're doing fine, so I would say that's likely the way forward. It also gives you the flexibility to take just the chassis with the HDX card(s) to a tracking session, and leave the UAD stuff back at your studio for Mix...

I'm running my HDX card in a Sonnet box with my Laptop for tracking sessions at other studios, and I have my 2012 MacPro Tower connected to HORUS (audio interface) back here for mix, via Cat6 Ethernet (Ravenna). I find the sound of the ProTools mixer running on the Intel CPU to sound much more pleasing and open, than on the HDX Card (when it comes to mix). Obviously, for tracking sessions, or mixes at high sample rates with high track count, HDX2 is the only way..!..

I would imagine the Magma Thunderbolt boxes are equally as good as Sonnet, although others may have more thoughts on that...
