Default Re: How many drives does PT8 need?

It's highly recommended that there is a minimum of two drives: One for the OS and one for audio and all else. If you use large libraries of samples, a third is recommended. And of course, the ever-needed bu drive!

This is exactly what I run on separate drives:

OS and PT
Audio (3 partitions on two separate drives)
Libraries
Back-up
External back-up

(Libraries and back-up are the same physical drive with separate partitions. There is also one audio partition on this physical drive)

Why so many audio partitions? Smaller partitions mean faster seek time when fade files, etc. are scattered throughout the partition.

PT has to be/should be on ur system drive only...Is that what ur meaning? & raid isn't supported when it comes to PT; U should take a look @ the General trouble shootings & Help us Help u threads if u haven't...

Default Re: How many drives does PT8 need?

Yes, you're right, and i now PT doesn't support Raid, that's why i wanted to put it in a separate drive. My question was: Is it possible to run PT outside OS drive? Or am i forced to install it there? All those questions because my OS/System drive is Raid 0. I don't want to undo it because of PT. i prefer to have it in a separate HDD with other stuff like samples, plugins etc...if its possible, of course...

Thx 4 the help.

Best regards...

I'v got four internal 250GB SATA's:

- System (Leopard and PT)
- Session (Audio and PT files etc.)
- Data (Sample libraries)
- System (Tiger for my 'real job' — design apps)

+ 1 TB external backup (for all of the above)

+ DVD archives of any downloads (sample libraries) and PT sessions

I sleep easier at night

Pro Tools should run from a RAIDed OS drive but the Templates may not work

I could understand running a RAID 1 mirror for OS but a 0 stripe seems to be asking for disaster.
