PTF takes its sound input only from the Mac Sound Manager, which works only at 16 bits, making recording into PTF at 24 impossible.
Looks to me like he's found a way to DO IT !!!!

Maybe, maybe not. I wonder what drivers will work with those devices and PTF. John is correct that SoundManager does not support 24bit. I have yet to read about anyone having success with any third party drivers.

This discussion of 24 bit is off topic (the topic is: clipping and compression of vocals).

Nevertheless, those who are interested can go to this link for a list of PT FREE compatible 24 bit interfaces and sound cards.

Let's remember that we're in the Pro Tools FREE forum and the issue is whether there is any way to record into a 24-bit session in Pro Tools FREE. The fact that there are 24-bit audio-capture devices is irrelevant unless they use a driver that can be used with Pro Tools FREE. As far as I know, Pro Tools FREE gets its sound ONLY from the Mac Sound manager which does does support 24-bit sound.

So has anyone ever recorded into a 24-bit Pro Tools FREE session? I doubt it.

Actually, John Link, the issue is not 24 bit recording in PT FREE.

The issue is "clipping and compression of vocals." Can we get back to the topic?

Well, you've posted twice with nothing relating to the original topic Mr. Wannabe Moderator.

Um....I don't want to rock the boat or freak anyone out, but I was having trouble figuring out whether or not there was a validated response on the whole limiter issue that prompted the discussion......was the final solution just the outboard compressor unit, or was there a solution making use of the PTF compressor?

PS- for the record I promise not to say anything about using PTF for 24 bit recording.

Any compressor in PTF is useless for the problem posed. The signal must be compressed before it gets to the computer.
