Re: Pro Tools 11 CPU usage issue
+1 on CPU spike issues.
Mac 10.8.5 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 mid 2010 Laptop 8GB RAM Drive is RAID array which was easily capable of 96 tracks in 10.3.7 Session runs in 10.3.7 with about 75% cpu usage, can't play the same session at all in 11.1.2, due to system usage being much higher and oscillating between low and 100%. I tried lowering the priority of Spotlight, and will try disabling hyper threading, haven't done that one yet. I was hoping that Pro Tools 11 would show a dramatic DECREASE in cpu usage on the same session. I deactivated all the tracks in the session, and of course it would play. Reactivate only one track, and it spikes and won't play. Plugins used are Oxford Dynamics and EQ (AAX) and Brianworx V2 (AAX) Tried deactivating all plugs but session still spikes. I'll also try removing all third party plugs and adding back one at a time. . . Just thought I'd add my voice to the people having CPU spike issues with PT 11... |

Re: Pro Tools 11 CPU usage issue
To be honest I don't think Pro Tools 11 for OSX is optimized properly for hyper threading. The operating systems controls hyper threading but its up the applications to dictate and SPREAD itself across all cores, virtually and non virtually.
Avid has some work to do and to be honest most "normal" users of Pro Tools don't even realize the CPU spikes so they don't bother to tell Avid about them. Disabling HT helps a lot so I know this is a Pro Tools issue. I will give it to Avid that since PT11 is now new to the 64 bit world to give them some time to work out the HT issues. Its the same as the gaming communities if those apps don't code the games to support HT then they won't even utilize the virtual cores. In my opinion the moderators on this board really need to push Avid harder to fix the HT issues. Trust me I know about HT and coding applications. |

Re: Pro Tools 11 CPU usage issue
So... I was experiencing this on a retina iMac 27", 24gb ram 10.10 Pt11.2.1
It was driving me crazy... CPU usage would spike even ad IDLE. I eventually tracked it down to the AIR reverb plugins on my aux sends... once I removed them the spikes went away.. hope this helps someone... s0nguy |

Re: Pro Tools 11 CPU usage issue
the other thing is, and Avid tells you this in their documentation, turn your wifi off. You can usually turn it right back on a minute later and it won't cause a problem but you have to let whatever rogue software (MAC) you have running give up and DIE.
