Default "current playback engine doesn't support sample rate"

I have been recording fine. I opened an old session. Now I opened a session done yesterday, and get a message saying "The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 44.1 kHz."

I can't change the Mbox Pro sample rate while Pro Tools is open, so I closed it, turn off Mbox, reboot computer, and open the Mbox Control Panel as a stand alone program. I change the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. I close, reboot, turn off and on Mbox, open Pro Tools, and yesterdays session, and get message saying "The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 48 kHz."

I've fiddled with it a dozen ways. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, what I should do? Thanks so much for any help.

Seems to me you have the Mbox set as the windows default playback device.

Right click the sound icon in your task bar, select playback devices. Right click your internal card (likely Realtek something or other) and set that as default.
Now Windows won't hijack the sample rate settings of your Mbox.

That freed it up. Fascinating. Where the f would I be without this forum? Thank you so much my friend for solving this for me! I'm also a lawyer, and if there's anything I can ever do for you, let me know.
