Default SOOOO Fed up with Pro Tools

I'm so fed up of the crashes, over and over.
I'm running PT 8.0.3 cs2 with 10.6.2
All my plugins are up to date, even with no plug ins I get this problem.
I can't open a "big" session on the first try. I get kernel panic.
Seems like I have to open and close sevral little sessions before I can open a big one.
Then I'm good all day. but at first I'll go through 2 or 3 kernel panics..

I just bought a brand new MacPro, a brand new chassis and had all my card inspected by Pro Tools support and I'm still having the same problem I had with my G5 and old Chassis.

All this since updating to 8.0

I hate you guys !!!

I'm running an HD3 Accel PCIX with a Magma Chassis on an 8-core MacPro, OSX 10.5.8 and PT8.0.whatever. I haven't had as much as a crash, lockup, glitch, anything..... it just works. What is in your system? I can't say I'm into Snow Leopard yet, it's just too new.

Nothing is in my system. I only run Pro Tools on this computer.
I have 6 cards though, a core, 2 accel's and 3 "normal" card.
In PT 8.0 I couldn't even open sessions with anything from Mc DSP on it.
Talk about a joke.

It's very annoying when things doesn't work. Especially when you have invested in a expensive HD setup.

Have you tried all the troubleshooting on the following page : http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=54888

Have you tried removing all plugins to the unused plugins folder and then add back one by one to se where it might go wrong ?

What are the 3 "normal" cards in your machine ?

If nothing is in your system, then how are you running anything? What I'm asking is WHICH Mac do you have, what I/O's, what versions of what plugins, how many cards, PCIX or PCIE, etc? There are thousands and thousands of systems that work perfectly fine, let's try to figure out why YOUR system does not.

Chrisdee, have you gone to that page you are talking about ?
It's from 2005!!! They say you can't have airport on, you can't have bluetooth on, you can't have akeyboard pluged in and you screen has to be turned off. How rediculous is that ?
It's about time Pro Tools works under ANY condition!!!!

I don't have my airport on but I do use bluetooth and it has always worked under 7.4 so that's not an issue.
I did go through all my plugins with a pro tools tech support.

I'm not looking for help here, I've already done that. I'm just letting all out. Telling the world how annoyed I am with Digidesign, Avid, whatever the name.

Look at them fools, it takes them months to figure out if Pro tools will still run under a new system update.

They still haven't figured out that the best way to stop having problems with plug ins is to have a plugin scanner go though all the plugins and test them before PT can be launched ala Logic Pro style.

Anyway.. still looking for someone who knows what he's doing to come and look at my rig.

Thanks.

Paul - Have you run the DiskWarrior 4.1? If I were you that's what I'd do. Whenever I get a kernel panic, I do that and for me it has always helped.

And if I still couldn't get it working after that, having tried removing all plug-ins, I'd seriously consider reformatting and reinstalling the system software and then Pro Tools. I personally have never in 12 years of using Pro Tools had to resort to such drastic measures, but your frustration sounds severe. Another thing to do is try to determine if you have some bad RAM. Maybe remove any 3rd party RAM that's been installed.

I say this because a healthy system doesn't kernel panic. It's easy to blame the software, but it may not be the cause of the crashes. Good luck.

Man, with a Kernel Panic loading large sessions, I'd sure suspect bad RAM I think. It would make sense, at some point when that memory is used, etc.

The main troubleshooting things to do from that list, and pretty much 100% necessary before any more advanced troubleshooting can be done:

1) plugin check. You say you did this, OK.
2) delete prefs and databases, restart
3) repair permissions
4) uninstall and reinstall PT
5) repair persmissions
5) download and re-run the 10.6.2 COMBO updater (it HAS to be Combo)
6) repair persmissions

That's what I would try, in that order, if I was you. It will be a pain, but I'd think if you did all those things, and were still having problems, then I'd start suspecting hardware, or other drivers interfering or something. What over apps/utils are you running. Not saying they SHOULD cause problems, but maybe.

If you have a spare drive, a firewire drive, erase it, installe 10.6.2 on it, and then install ProTools ONLY, and nothing else, no extra plugins, etc. Boot from that drive, and try and open your sessions. If they open and don't Kernel Panic, then your problem is something other than hardware, 10.6.2 or PT 8.0cs3. It's not a bad idea to have such a drive anyway, as a safety boot drive, just for instances like this.

Just some thoughts. Believe me, feel your pain, PT8 has been the worst version I've had to deal with, and we're getting no help from Digi on pretty much anything important.

We're alone floating on Sea of 'we don't give a damn'
