Default 6-core (3.33GHz) or 2 quad-core (2.4GHz) Westmere

Hello everyone,
so I want to replace my G5 and have to decide between the 6-core (3.33GHz) or the dual quad-core (2.4GHz) Westmere processor setup.
I usually have mid size mixes (64 tracks) and a couple of VIs.
I know that ram has a lot to do with performance but just to keep it simple I want to choose between these two setups.
Cheers, Detlef.

I would go for the 6 core for no other reason than having the fastest and newest technology at hand.

I'd also go for the 6. I like the math.

everymac.com has a great comparison with theoretical 'geekbench' scores where you can compare. According to the numbers, there isn't much in it - the 6 core is slightly quicker tho.

The dual quad can hold 64GB of RAM - should you ever choose... And comes with more to begin with. BUT, the 6 core has faster RAM... Sheesh.

Seems like most apps don't really spread out over the cores that much, and faster/higher clock speed is the important bit.

....just remember that PT9 can currently access 4gigs of ram as an appication / 32 bit program. sad to say, i found this out after stacking up 16 gig of ram on my dual core nehalem mac.

i also run 64 tracks, no issues here, with proper system setup, processor selection ,etc.... run your activity monitor app on your mac it, will show you what is using your ram, it may also suggest that you can save a little on ram and buy more plug ins.... (what i wish i had known....system and PT9 using about 5 gigs and often, 9 to 11 gigs available for surfing the web, itunes, celemony melodyne..
