Default Hardware monitoring - compensation?

Hi folks,

In PT I usually have my buffer set to 256... especially since I've *accidentally* upgraded to Mojave. I monitor through my Apogee Ensemble's interface mixer program, which has zero latency. I mute the record enabled track in PT. I wonder if PT automatically compensates for the delay in the system? Or are my recorded tracks 256 samples off?

Thanks!

Check the reference manual under "Delay Compensation".

Thanks. I tried to look it up but failed I guess. Can you point me in the right direction?

You failed to find "delay compensation" in the Pro Tools Reference Guide?

Are you asking a hypothetical question or if you are having a problem what exactly is going on? Describe enough of what you are doing so anybody here has any hope of helping you. You have a precision DAW in front of you. If things are not lining up as you expect then *exactly* how many samples are they off. What signal routing is used? What plugins in Pro Tools, is ADC enabled, what delays is it reporting, etc. etc. if you have no clue about this stuff, then it's time to do that reading.

Since Pro Tools 12 won't every be supported on Mojave and who knows what other issues you might run into I'd be getting a plan in place to get yourself out of the mess you made. Get out your backups, reinstall an old OS or upgrade to 2018.10 and be ready to take any support updates when they happen.

Thank you for replying. I hate to use this as an excuse but I suffered brain damage in a road accident about a year back and have trouble getting through stuff like this ever since. Used to be no problem.

The question I'm looking to answer, I guess, is if my tracks end up in the right place if I monitor directly through my Apogee when recording while muting the record enabled track in PT, with PT set to 256 buffer size.

Thanks anyway.

It should be compensated directly by Pro Tools, without requiring ADC (ADC correct plugin/internal mixer delays, Pro Tools should handle correcting for the IO buffer delays itself).

What is happening? Did it change when you moved to Mojave?

I can't tell you, I'm sorry. It's just this idea that I head, that my recordings might be out of sync. I can be a bit obsessive sometimes. I'll just leave it to it and continue recording!

There is a checkbox on the IO setup for "Compensate After Record Pass"(or something like that)

Dave, that is Pro Tools Ultimate with Avid HD hardware only (since Pro Tools knows the actual converter delay there it can whack that as well).
