I suggest putting all music projects on an external device like a usb. After installing move the files back onto your computer.

Please note. Try loading a fresh sessions and try midi playback. If that works then proceed to loading your session. If it doesn't work then it is something you changed in the playback engine or settings.

What wasn't working was my midi input device.
Sorry I should've specified.

A clean install of Pro Tools and plug-ins means a clean install after having left nothing behind. I run the installers in admin mode from the desktop.

The point is to start from scratch letting the Pro Tools installer and all of the plug-in installers define the permissions for the locations where they install. This doesn't really take all that long.

I actually leave UAC on and have had no problems. My experience has been that tweaks almost never make a performance improvement in win 7 and 8 like they did with XP. I do a "dumb" install of everything so my system will be as predictable as possible.
