Default RME UFX vs BLA 003R, need a little help...

Been thinking about a change in my home setup. I'm running PT10 on a Win7 machine using a BLA Sig mod 003R as my main interface. It's been a workhorse for me but I've been itching lately and the RME UFX has caught my attention. The USB 2 option, additional analog and ADAT inputs on the UFX are very enticing and I've read a fair bit of good reviews on them.

Has anybody had enough experience with these two units to share some comparative thoughts? I know that conversion implementation in general has progressed since the 003R came out and am thinking that even with the BLA work the stock UFX may be on par? I'm not looking to split hairs on conversion but don't want to regress quality wise either.

Any help is much appreciated.

I have already. They don't really stack much of anything up to the FM192/002R/003R sig mod levels. I have seen some split opinions on their UFX mod and was hoping somebody has had some exposure to the stock UFX and a BLA 003R, at least to share some direct experience.

I pretty much trust BLA but there is always wisdom to be found in a multitude of counselors...

I think you pretty much can't go wrong with RME. i've owmed the 003 console and rack plus which were thorns. Also own an RME hdsp aio pcie card.
Without a doubt the virtual mixer you get on the RME alone makes it worth the jump. I think the ufx mixer is even newer. The ability to mix and match i/o really is incredible. Plus what you can use it for explained on the thread below..

+1 for RME

The 003R has been very solid for me on my system, I am sure the RME would be as well. The virtual mixer will be useful but it's not too critical for my needs. RME wins on hardware features no doubt, a USB2 option and 12 analog plus ADAT is great. The conversion and sound is where I am hanging, after BLA did their thing on the 003R it made a considerable difference. I don't want to split hairs over it, there are factors other than the last 4-5% of conversion quality that go into the equation. I just don't want to gain features at the expense of a significant drop in quality.

I love RME stuff but I'd be hesitant about a USB interface with PT until I heard someone doing that successfully.

Edit. I see it has firewire 400. Looks like a good Piece of kit, I used the RME raydat fro a few months and loved it.

Once you use an interface with a built in mixer and DSP you may never go back. I love my ULN-2 for just those reasons alone. And I dare say it's as good and probably better sounding than my HD modded 002. While I know the sig mod is a lot better than the HD mod, I am willing to bet the UFX is a very good sounding box too.

I've got a little Saffire USB 6 that I take with me for quick sketches/ideas when I travel, it runs fine on USB1.1. With RME's reputation and proprietary approach to their USB and FW implementation I'd feel pretty confident on either protocol.

The comparison of the the ULN-2 sounding close to the 002R HD mod has me thinking how well the UFX may measure against the Sig modded 003R, the ULN-2 is pretty widely very well regarded.

Tough decisions, I'll have to let the 003R 1st to grab the UFX...

I do appreciate the perspective and help though.

Any other thoughts out there? I figured somebody around here has had their ears close enough to both units to have some perspective.

Of course in the absence of direct experience, imaginative, intelligent and even biased speculation is also welcome.

I had the opportunity to borrow the UFX last year (only for a weekend though). I did some testing of the conversion quality against my Mbox Pro.

As you may have heard the Mbox Pro is many steps up in conversion quality from the old Mbox2 Pro and 003. I have tested and the improvement is definitley very noticable. Like a blanket being removed from the converters.

The difference between UFX and Mbox Pro is not so big, but noticable. UFX is better to my ears. Softer/rounder, but a bit more detailed. Mbox Pro sounds brighter in comparison.

I have no problem reccomending UFX. I have not tested against a BLA modded 003 though.
