Internal SATA vs Firewire
I have a PC, what would you suggest as extra pro tools storing drive, SATA2 or Firewire?
A Seagate 7500rpm Sata comes at a much cheaper price than a Firewire LaCie. |

Internal SATAs are also stupid easy to swap out and archive.

Re: Internal SATA vs Firewire
Yeah u wanna get `det` rid of raid asap as it isn't supported...will it work? Yeah, but that risk is on u & as u see, its really not even a comparison between sata & firewire IMO...

Re: Internal SATA vs Firewire
Meaning that Firewire is better than SATA as audio-disk? :) sorry I need to get it written on the wall.

Re: Internal SATA vs Firewire
What I would do would be to buy 1 new drive. Use a disk cloning utility to clone whats on your RAID array to the new drive. Then split up the RAID array and use the two drives as your recording drive and a spare, backup or samples drive.
This assumes you can find a disk utility that will copy a RAID volume. I tried this with a RAID5 array and didn't have any luck. Supposedly some disk utilities will clone a RAID array as its not the sole bootable drive in the system. I never tried installing XP onto a fresh drive and then booting from that. Some expensive enterprise level disk management suites will let you clone an array but I ain't spending 500.00+ bucks. I tried Acronis Disk Director, True Image and Norton Partition Magic to no avail.

Re: Internal SATA vs Firewire
SATA II all the way if you can help it. Even though most hard drive won't saturate the whole 3Gb that SATA II offers, it will be a lot faster and snappier than a Firewire 400Mb drive. Also in the Pro Tools world, they support 24 tracks on Firewire, 32 on SATA II, which it can do more than that. SATA II all the way. I would suggest you use a RAID1 configuration ONLY for back up on another system, server, or external drive just to back up your work. As far as your workstation, use no RAID on the audio drive.
