Default windows 7 still works?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone is running the latest pro tools with win 7?

I know it's not being supported but one of my laptops I've used for years runs smoothly with PT 10 and I don't want to change the OS.

Thanks for the feedback.

This is a great case for pulling the system drive and keeping it just as it is(IOW, working with PT10). Install a fresh SSD, load up Windows 10 and the latest version of PT(and the old drive becomes a very nice backup plan)

Yes it works with caveats: PT 12* must be installed first then 2018 can be installed over it with the old APP manager(i dont know if the new link manager will work). Also there are some graphics issues that are inherent esp noticeable when working in the mix window and dragging clips(the "waveform" disappears and/or appears below the actual track position. I just put the cursor where it's supposed to go and the clip ends up there , but it can be a bit annoying. I would actually recommend doing it the easy(second system drive)way explained above. SSDs for laptops are much cheaper than they used to be, and you really dont want to use a laptop spinner with PT anyway-I burned one up pretty quickly when i tried that back with PT 12.1.

This is what forced me to move from Win7 to Win10. Makes detailed editing slow and painful. Win10 is actually more convenient to use than 7.

Or to quote that pirate meme guy, "Well, yes! But actually, no."

You can leave PT10 installed and have PT11+ co-installed. You will have to install the 64 bit versions of all your plugins, of course.

Thank you, albee...

I am in the exact same scenario… I have a very old but failing system. I’m going to put in a new SSD, as a starter.

Would you be willing, in a nutshell, to say what you think works better with Windows 10?

I hear it is a resource hog. I wonder if that affects the performance while using PT?

Is there anywhere you can still get a free Findows 10 upgrade?

Quick search on web came up with this.
Use at your own discretion. Information was created in 2019

I think that Win 10 is a leaner OS as compared to Win 7(YMMV). Since Win 7 is no longer well-supported, it just makes sense(to me) to bite the bullet and move forward. I know of no way to get Win 10 for free at this point, but I bought 2 authorizations off eBay sellers(with tons of positive feedback) and paid $50 for each(both authorizations worked here on 2 different PC's). You can download the installer from Microsoft(you can actually run it unregistered, but certain functions are not allowed until you register with a valid authorization code).
