Default MTRX II. Preamp control across multiple devices.

I've come across a curious issue today, which is that I cannot get preamp control working in Pro Tools, I suspect because I am using multiple MTRX/DAD family devices.

I have a MTRX II and an AX64 connected over DADlink.
I also have a MTRX I that I am using for its Digilink ports (I'm on HDX 2).

The MTRX II is the master device.
The AX64 slaves off DADLINK.
The MTRX is slaving off Dante at the moment.

The MTRX II has 24 channels of LINE IN
The AX64 has a single 8 channel Mic Pre/Line AD card.
This is the card I want to have preamp control of from Pro Tools.

I have configured everything correctly in DADman and Pro Tools, using IAC bus 1 and 2.

and I get this error:

Does Pro Tools/Dadman not support preamp control across multiple units?
Would seem weird if this was the case because Avid allow you to have up to 9 x Pre devices in Pro Tools.

I'm not sure anyone here has come up against this before, but perhaps they have?

Everything else is working 100% perfectly well, it is just this that does not.
Any help welcome.

Apologies for the large pictures. I will try to reduce them now.

I think I’ve figured it out.
I think midi is transported over TB in the AX64.
I need to swap the TB module back to the AX64.
Will do this tomorrow.

Pretty sure it isn't. It's transported over the network.
If there wasn't a TB module, mic pre control would still work which means it can't be over TB. Not to mention, a big point of these is remote control over the IP stack from 100m. I doubt the assumption would be everyone would get fibre optic TB cables.

In Pro Tools, try changing your channel number to 4 for each (instead of 1).
It'd help to see a picture of your AD section in DADman.

OK. Will try channel 4 and take the screen shot.

I logged a support call with Avid asking if Midi was transported over Thunderbolt in the MTRX II and AX64 and received this reply:
'MIDI is transported over the Thunderbolt, correct.'

It seemed strange to do it differently between the 1st gen and 2nd gen devices but it was also the only thing that explained why this was happening given everything else was correct.

I'll also try it with my Macbook or Mac Pro and see if this isn't just IAC being screwed on the Mac Studio.

Will report back.

Here is the AD section of DADman.

https://i.imgur.com/rfjS1gU.png

I won't directly embed as it is quite wide.
The AX64's 8 channels are the last 8, the first labelled 'Hydrasynth L'.

I tried changing to Midi channel 4 and I am still getting the same error.

OK, it works just fine on the Mac Pro so this is a local issue.

Will try to reinstall Pro Tools, Eucon, Dadman and see if it changes anything.

Keep an eye on the Apple Silicon versions; this can be related to AS versions of Avid software. You may troubleshoot AS and Rosetta versions separately.

Great that remote control works in general for DAD products, too.

Cheers,
Kevin

I have figured out part of the issue.
A few weeks ago I had to create a new user account on my Mac Studio because iCloud documents stopped syncing. I was unable to turn syncing back on with that user account. You click the button in iCloud settings and it automatically turns itself off.

So I created a new administrator account and that was the one that I have tried to get Pre control working with.
I have logged back into the original account (which still does not work with iCloud syncing) but Pre control DOES work.

I have tried creating a 3rd user account on this machine and it also does not work with Pre control.
The original account works just fine, in either Rosetta or Silicon.

So it is something to do with creating a new user account and perhaps some permissions or privilege issue?

Very strange and it isn't solved for me yet, I need it to work with a newly created user account, because I rely on iCloud document sync.

Edit: I managed to fix the original account by turning off iCloud, deleting the backup, deleting a hidden 'Documents' alias in Macintosh HD/Users/~user, creating a new Documents folder, then turning on iCloud and then turning on Desktop and Documents sync.
What a PITA.

Still, it doesn't explain why creating a new user account will not allow Pre control to work.
