Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive
If Pro Tools CPU usage is spiking on you and causing errors with playback on sessions that previously worked fine, the first thing I suggest is disabling Microsoft OneDrive.
A recent Windows update enabled OneDrive on my computer and caused the problems mentioned above. I couldn't find the problem and I went as far as formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows - but it didn't help at all! Then, when I disabled OneDrive everything immediately started working smoothly. |

Re: Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive
Thanks for the tip.
It's a good idea on Windows to turn off any background sync/transfer process, like automatic updates, One Drive, ... |

Re: Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive
On W10 Pro you can use Group Policy Editor to turn off OneDrive.

Re: Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive
I simply uninstall Microsoft OneDrive. I use GoogleDrive instead - with no automatic syncing ever.

Re: Spiking CPU Usage - Microsoft OneDrive
I'm using OneDrive all the time on my PT machine with zero problems (it's my daily backup "drive"), so while it's worth checking if you encounter a problem, it's not an "all-in-one" solution.
A side note, I find people (and Avid) to be a bit trigger happy with "disable everything" guidelines. It's not 2001 anymore and PCs/Macs are capable of running background tasks just fine. |
