Default Audio fragments replacing regions and looping at random

Having an issue with one specific TV program:

At some point while working with material (which was fine previously)- it will suddenly truncate and loop one small portion for the duration of the region.

For example, in the mix session an interview clip will look visually correct (region duration is correct) but sonically will play the same 2 second audio blurb over and over for the duration (and the waveform overview will reflect this looped bit of audio). Going back to the OMF and to the editorial sessions, the same material is fine, however upon importing into the mix session it suddenly corrupts and beings behaving this way.

It doesn't just happen with location audio, I'm getting similar behavior on music tracks and other stereo files as well...

But it's not specific to a 'mix session' or a specific rig, sometime editorial sessions will do the same-- Importing from OMF for prep and finding these truncated and looped audio bits--- then going back to the OMF directly and it's fine- the process of importing into a new session seems to trigger the problem.

It seems to be more likely to happen when media associated with the session needs to be 'relinked' (i.e. importing directly from a session which all the media is in the AUDIO FILES folder for that session usually works ok, but then importing from a session where the audio came from a secondary session and must be relinked seems to error more often). However while this makes it more likely to happen, it still sometimes seems to happen even when a relink was not done.

Also I've opened a session directly to find the material fine, and then imported the same tracks from a secondary session and they import alongside the originals incorrectly. Going back to the source session for the import, the material was fine. Once it's imported, it goes corrupted...

I'm going nuts with this problem-- it only seems to be happening with one series but I'm wasting hours going back to omf and recutting material that was already prepped but imports wrong. I've tried reviewing the clients export methods and it looks like they're doing everything normally.

The only real oddity I can find is the files in the folder- the names or files seem to be truncated versus their region name so every 2 channel file results in 2 files named like:
0220A04.02.new.02
0220A04.02.new.02.1
But in reviewing I can find dozens of other shows and OMFs with the same behavior and none of them do this.

Has anyone encountered this before?

The Good News: You are not alone. I have experienced this off and on over the past year. Although, not lately.

The Bad News: I can't figure it out either.

At first I thought it had to do with FCP and file naming conventions. But then it happened on some exports that i got from Avid and other PT systems as well. Definitely related to linking to media.

Your post describes exactly my problem so I wont share my experience as it is exactly the same.

It hasn't happened for a few months now. Maybe 9.0.3 fixed it? What are you running?

Me:
HD3 PT9.0.3
OSX 10.6.7
2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon
3 Gig RAM
192 and 96 i/o
D-Control

Currently running a mix of 8 and 9 systems... going to do some experiments to see if software version changes anything.

Thanks
