Default Film Music in 5.1

I have a basic general question...when mixing music such as film music in 5.1, what typically is getting sent to surround speakers? Are there certain things in the mix getting sent to the rear or typically only reverbs?

Just curious how this all is usually done for music....I know sound effects and other things get sent around quite often just wondering how often music leaves the stereo field.

Thanks,
Chris

in my experience mostly reverbs. it could be very annoying and destracting, hearing defined instruments from the rear.

Thanks for the reply. Is it very often that just a stereo music mix is used or is the mix always prepared 5.1?

it depends. nowadays orchestral score is usually recorded for 5.1 (or more precise 5.0). when the music is predominant (for example like in these "jazz"-movies), these recordings will as well be done in 5.0.
stereo is still common for all kinds of "non-orchestral" music (all flavours of "pop"music).
