Default 002r and Cubase - Distorted Audio Playback

Hello everyone,

I've got a major problem wich is driving me nuts.
I'm using a 002 rack with cubase 5 under win7 64bit.
I've used the 002 for a long time under WinXP, never had any problems.

Basically all audio is extremely distorted on playback,
VSTi sound works fine and with no problems at all, only imported or recorded audio is affected.
When I increase the buffersize to 4096 the distortion is less strong, but its still there, not to mention that such a buffersize isnt practical.
When I bounce audio its clean, so its only on playback inside cubase.
I've got a Texas Instruments PCI FW card, so thats not it.
I have tried driver versions 9.0 and 9.0.2.65 since those are the only ones available.

What could be the cause of this ? I would greatly appreaciate any help.

well maybe, but this setup has always worked fine on xp with old xp digi drivers, same Cubase same 002.
So it feels like it could be a driver related issue.
My research tells me it sounds like some clock problem!?
Other people are experiencing the same problem with the 002r in Cubase, unfortunately these people havent gotten much help on the Cubase forums.

We aren't Cubase users so little help can really be expected over here.

Working fine under XP really means little since it's quite a big difference from Windows 7.
Some people find success using compatibility mode on programs in Windows 7 but I have never seen it really help.

Still sounds like a Cubase problem whether it's system compatibility or a setting in Cubase.

Did you upgrade your version of Cubase to a Window 7 compatible version?

Also you said

A quick Google showed me that Cubase users have had these issues since the release of Windows 7 and found that using the ASIO4All driver alleviates the problem.
So I would suggest that you go that route as well.

Im running Cubase 5.5.3, it should be win 7 compatible.
I have googled for like 8 hours straight, and the only thing I've read about
Asio4all is that people have had problems because of it, but nothing in correlation with the 002.. but idk sometimes it makes a difference how you approach google, like what search terms you use etc, or i just suck at googleing . But I'm not doubting you, I'm going to try it out anyway, so thank you for the suggestion!

If i cant get it to work i will just have to go back to xp for now, wich isnt the end of the world either. The 002 really served me well for alot of years, but maybe its just time to retire the thing.

Thank you anyway SKI for trying to help, i really appreciate it.

Normally when ASIO4ALL causes a problem it's related to something other than the driver.
The real advantage is it allows ASIO compatible devices to perform without having to deal with vendor induced variables.

It's created by Steinberg so should typically be Cubase friendly.
Just avoid the multi-channel version ithas a strange personality.

There's an early pre-pt9 beta driver for win7, released 3 years ago.
it doesn't provide sample accurate recordings and direct monitoring, but at least they do not distort.
After that avid released those broken v9 asio drivers You've been trying out and despite numerous requests, they didn't fix anything.
Considering 00x series is discontinued, i'm pretty sure that they will not fix it.

my own solution was.. rme ucx.. :)

but you could try asio4all or these drivers:

ps. my original thread - the same issue: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=277986
