Default Future of NT

Just a question: What`s the future of PT NT ?
A friend of mine wants to buy a PT system and is very experienced in NT so he asked me what I can say about PT NT. You know I had a NT system and had to swap to MAC for some reasons ( video support, plugins, and I hope as soon as possible surround) and I don`t really want to start the MAC vs. PC war but I am very satisfied with my MAC. My NT system was alway reliable so I can`t really say anything against it. But what`s about the future?
If I read the Digi compato docs - it`s something very very old.
IBM is not anymore producing the Intelistation.
Is there any motherboard on the market which has BX chipset and PT is working?
Since the beginning of the year you can`t buy NT anymore. Are there still some licences on the market? If not, is Digi still able to sell some PT NT systems?
What`s the best recommendation?
Shall I say NT is okay or shall I say in long term the MAC is the better solution?
And Digi what do you say about?

In hoping of responses Wolfgang

If you are referring to the TDM version of PT, I can tell you that the current plan for 5.1 is to be released on Windows 2000. This is one of our top priorities. I'd like to hear from users out there what they think with regards to this. Are people comfortable with upgrading their OS to 2000, or would they like to see NT 4.0 support as well. There are trade-offs and pros and cons for both ways, so let's here what you think.

Digi,
Let 5.1 run on Windows 2000 - I used Win2K for a quite a while using other 3rd party audio softwares and as far as i can tell its the most stable Wintel O.S ever.

In my case, upgrading To WIN2K will be a pleasant and exciting move !

Thanks for the EXCELLENt news on TDM PC!

I suppose it would help to know some of the specifics regarding the "pros and cons" of each platform. I would definately like to offer feedback this thread. USB will be nice. . .

My Mac just died. Oh joy. I'm beginning to regret my move to the mac platform after being happy for 3 months or so. I never in my life had a PC just die on me for no reason. I can't even get the mac to make a sound on startup.

Anyway, I had been running Windows 2000 for a year alongside my NT installation on separate drives. The only reason I ever booted NT was to run ProTools. 2000 will be a good move.

Like Corey, I have a dual boot system, and win2K seems very stable to me (not a single os crash, full control over applications that get lost). PT for win2k sounds perfect, and although it's rock solid, its getting old, and I'll drop NT in a second.

Corey, your Mac died???? Gotta tell my mac-fanatic friends

Big deal, gear conks out all the time (PC's included, platform has nothing to do with it). It's possible you had a power surge, I've had this happen (even with surge protection). Sounds like it was just the power supply - it's under warrantee so just take it into a service center, should be able to fix it pretty quick.

The pros and cons are mostly time to market questions versus how many users have a rock solid NT system running PT 5.01 and don't want to mess with it. By time to market, I mean testing 5.1 on just 2000 or both NT 4.0 and 2000. One scenario obviously longer than the other. The next release of PT, say 5.2, will certainly not support NT 4.0, so the question is do we move to 2000 now or wait till the next version, and have this version support both NT 4.0 and 2000. So far it looks like nobody seems to be stapled to their NT 4.0 systems.

Okay Digi that`s the software side but what about new hardware?
You know Intelistation is not produced anymore, hardly to get any BX motherboards which are working with PT.
What are you recommending new buyers?
