Default Windows HDX lowest buffer size.

I have an Windows 10 HDX PT rig and at 44 or 48k the lowest buffer size I can achieve is 64 samples. At 96k I can get 128. My question is what is the lowest buffer size I should be able to record at with an HDX system? I assume 32 samples would be better for me even on an HDX system but I dont get that option, what gives?

Those are the correct buffer sizes for the different sample rates.

Yeah I don’t think it gives you the 32 option, b/c awhile back- iirc - Avid said you shouldn’t run at 32 samples it was bad or something or other.

The only thing that you gain is less midi vi latency, aside from that there isn’t any difference between 64 or 512 with an HDX card....it’s all a wash with the onboard DSP

So I can run a recording session at 96k 128, 256, 512 samples and I shouldn't be able to hear a difference in my headphone sends to the talent as long as I'm using low latency DSP plugins during recording (Haven't tried it yet)? If this is so with my HDX card, it'll make a lot of things easier when recording? Also are there any Windows processes you disable while recording or just in general? I can run a test recording session at 96k 128 samples with 12 mono and 6 stereo tracks for 90 to 110 minutes before I get an error and recording is stopped. Disk Cache is set to normal and the drive I record to has petty of space. Cpu meter jumps a little but doesn't overload. I just don't know why I get an error every time after 90 minutes. I never get a crash while mixing at 1024 samples, just while recording though I've only tested it at 128 samples and nothing any higher.

Default Windows HDX lowest buffer size.

If I recall correctly Avid has stated that running lowest buffer settings, (64/128) is not advised. Typically I can as well run at these lower levels however it can error out similarly.

Based on other threads here on the DUC, I turned off hyper-threading in my bios on my PC. If you haven’t tried it with your system testing I would recommend giving it a shot. I would be curious to hear your observations.

Default Re: Windows HDX lowest buffer size.

Low-latency monitoring with DSP mixing and plugins is the real justification for most people using HDX. No IO Buffer involved.

You should be doing all the standard systems optimization steps in the Pro Tools installation guide.

If having problems start with the troubleshooting steps under “help us help you” up the top of every DUC web page.

There is not much useful info here about what you are doing and what is happening. Starting with what exact AAE error or other crash are you getting? We cannot guess.

Disk cache should likely be set to a size, larger than the size of the sessions.

What actual real problems are you having that you are trying to solve?

Why are you doing such long recording test sessions? It seems a little strange doing long recordings like this and be worried about low latency monitoring at the same time.

If you are tracking and trying for low-latency hopefully you don’t have any native or UAD plugins used... right? Especially latency hungry UAD plugins.

If you want to run VIs etc that can be CPU intensive then look at track freeze and commit.

Watching CPU meters rarely helps... and remember previous comments about not using native and UAD plugins.

If you want more help here, post a SiSoft Sandra report, indicate what drive partition in that report you are recording to, and list the troubleshooting steps you have tried.
