Default Disk Cache

Merry Christmas to everyone!

I'm experimenting with disk cache but I have a couple of questions (Yes I did search before posting)

1. How does it help when recording? Say I have 1Gb setted for disk cache, does it react as a buffer for the HDD / SSD?

2. At playback, say if I have 1 Gb allocated and the project has more than that. I suspect it loads from where the cursor is located in PT and if I move it to a part that's not charged into the cache it starts loading that part?

Thanks,

Doesn’t help with recording; only with playback (once you stop recording, the new file can be cached)

It helps with recording by offloading concurrent read IO from drives. Most useful with HDD with large seek time compared to SSD.

Default Disk Cache

I leave it set to default when recording. I have had errors when the cache gets full. Not sure why, I found that default all but eliminates the errors. I have SSDs and an HDX system on my PC. I leave it at default on my MBPr also for the same reason.

What do you mean be "default"? If you are referring to the "NORMAL" setting, I have been told more than once that this setting is actually no cache. I run mine at 4GB here

So from what I understand with SSD it’s better set to normal, right?

Thanks

No. You cannot say that.

It's clearly likely to be better set to a size to hold your whole sessions. Or if that's not possible try it set as large as you can and see.

See what works for you.

Yes it helps on recording, you can even record to a slow usb stick if all of your session fits in memory... just dont touch anything once PT starts writing to the stick 😂

You know I was thinking about an usb stick :-D

So it does act like a buffer for recording, on your opinion.

Thanks,
