Default How do I playback at greater than 1X speed?

I'm running Pro Tools 12.5.0 on a Win 10 machine. I don't have HD. Is there a way to playback at greater than 1X? I do mostly audiobook work, and being able to playback at greater than 1X would really reduce my editing time.

Thanks in advance.

I believe you have Shuttle Lock Modes in PT vanilla. Start+5 (numpad) is normal speed, Start+6-9 is gradually faster. Plus/minus (numpad) is forward/reverse whilst shuttling.

And maybe it can be useful to check out : pressing Alt with the Scrubber Tool and drag.
The more you drag, the higher the speed of the playback.
Like with the idea above, a maximum of 2 tracks can be auditioned.

Stig, I don't appear to have shuttle mode in PT vanilla, which is what I think I've got. Pro Tools 12.5. The only Numeric Keypad modes offered in setup->Preferences->Operation are "Classic" and "Transport" There's a check box with "Transport" entitled "Use Separate and Stop Keys", but that doesn't seem to enable faster-than-real-time playback.

joachin, what you suggest works, but I'm editing audiobooks - passages of audio reading, say, 20 minutes long. What I need is to set playback at, say 1.5 or 2Xreal time. Fast enough to get done quickly but slow enough to hear the detail I need to hear - breaths, mistaken words, etc. Alt+scrubber can't be set to run continuously and is very hard to set to a constant, predictable speed.

Am I just screwed on this with the version of Pro Tolls I have?

Vanilla does have shuttle mode. Look in the Shortcuts guide in your Documentation folder which was installed along with PT. There is also a Documentation sub forum further down the main forum page.

It can run continuoulsy; as long as the left mouse button is pressed. Alt can be released after the initiation of the auditioning.
Maybe it is a matter of training oneself ("muscle memory") to find just the correct right-drag amount to achieve an understandable mickey-mouse-voice.
Unfortunately, upon releasing the left mouse button, the timeline insertion point does not jump to that position; so the eyes have to follow the waveform and the scrubbing marker.

If Edit Insertion Follows Scrub/Shuttle is checked under preferences - operation, and you also have Insertion Follows Playback selected the timeline insertion point will jump to the current position you stop at. One thing I have found is that, though variable shuttle using the keyboard is indeed an HD only feature, my Mackie HUIs' jog wheel will do variable speed shuttle when shuttle is selected. So you may not be able to use the keyboard in non HD, but it certainly works under HUI.

Thanks for correcting ! I was not aware.
It works even without Insertion Follows Playback.

Thanks for your input on this everyone. I edit a long-format weekly podcast and this is the closest I've been to playing Pro Tools at a faster than 1x speed.

Having to switch between scrub and the selector tool is still a pain in the arse, and trying to get the right speed using my mouse or mousepad is a pain too. Does anybody have any further tips for this solution that I might be missing?

I still feel this solution is very clunky and time consuming (I will carry on working through it though, to build the 'muscle memory' as Joachim suggested).

I'm going to bump this thread. I've been using PT Standard/Vanilla since 2001, never HD/Ultimate. I know that I've played back audio at incrementally slower and incrementally faster than real time speed and I know at least one other PT Standard/Vanilla user who has done the same using Start+Num Pad 1-9. When did PT Standard/Vanilla lose this ability?
