Default Why Reaper ? Why not Cubase ?

Hello,

I'm looking around for an alternative to my crippled PT 8.

I'm learning Reaper to Rewire it inside of PT, but why do I HAVE TO do this, just to boost my PT ?

I've read that a lot of veteran PT users here -including myself- are just turning the page and moving to Reaper completely. But Reaper won't have everything we need, right ? like the wave editor, so we still need to do some stuff in PT, other in Reaper, and probably work with both apps together.

Why are we not moving to Cubase instead, which have everything built in ?

Major complaints I have about PT, and I think we all agree, are:
1. ADC
2. 64bit
3. 3rd party interfaces
4. bounces
5. and the list goes on and on...

But Cubase has all that, cross-platform ! Why Reaper, then ? Just because of the price ? I don't think so...

Anyone ? Shane ?

Confusing... at least for me.

Cheers.

I noticed you made a similar response in another thread, asking about a WAVE editor in REAPER. I may be interpreting you wrong, but what exactly do you mean by this? What is it you are trying to do that you think REAPER can't?

As many people will tell you, REAPER has now surpassed Pro Tools in its editting ability and workflow! I myself was doing some very fast editting today in REAPER, and Shane is boasting he has sped up his editting workflow one hundred fold!!!

Sorry if that sounds defensive in some way, really don't mean it to. I loved Pro Tools, but I'm finding it hard to see any reason why I should stay now...

Good question. I can answer from one perspective.

Reaper is a "free" download fully functional for 30-60 days. Then only $60 USD. It is only 5 MB in size. That is incredably small for a DAW. I may be wrong but I don't believe Cubase come close on any of these points.

$$$$$

I would say that is the primary reason why most people are going Reaper as opposed to the competition.

You can argue that it is a much more modern system with developers that listen etc. (and you're right on all points) but I'm sure if the cost were the same, a lot more people would follow the tried and tested apps that we've known for years like Cubase.

I mean Studio One is fresh code, great workflows with everything being drag and drop, developers that listen and realistically a much more aesthetically pleasing interface - but most people are not going that way.

I truly believe it's the fantastic price and the fact that it's a damn stable and quite feature rich app as to why people are going to Reaper.

Not to mention, everyone likes the underdog right?

Its highly configurable and you can customize it to mimic work flows of existing DAWS. I don't think that Cubase is as customizable.

Its 60.00..... Cubase is 499.00?, 599.00?

Direct Developer access that results in rapid results.

Reaper because it's price/quality ratio is the best out there. And let's not talk about all the customization that is possible. Add to that a dev team that is listening and taking the wishes of their customers or potential customers seriously. Isn't that all we've been asking, praying and hoping for from our "beloved" Pro Tools dev team for years?

Read through the Reaper forum. You will see post after post with nothing but praise for this DAW. Most posts are "how do I do this or that", not "how do I get it to install", not "how do I stop these errors", not "why does it crash", or not "when will we get ADC". That alone should tell us all something. I truly look forward to a day when the DUC looks this way.

I use Cubase 4. It's a good alternative. It's a full featured DAW.

Reasons it might not be so popular here:

1. It has a bit of a history of being a "kiddy" DAW...apparently it's been cracked a lot in years gone by, and a large part of the user base was young and that was reflected in the Cubase forums--the level of the conversations was nowhere near that of the DUC. This is not a reflection on the quality of the DAW, just the user base. And..I think it's grown out of that phase.

2. Version 4 of Cubase was rather buggy...much as PT can be now. Apparently the current version, 5, is much more stable. But that kind of thing leaves an uncomfortable feeling...

I like PC/Cubase better than Apple/Logic, having used both... I haven't really put in time with Reaper, but I'm certainly keeping my eye on it.

No one knows how many people are moving to Reaper.
The talk here is all anecdotal and a good bit of it is by a small group of rabid Reaper fanboys.
i suspect if PT wasn't driving people insane with bugs the talk of moving anywhere would die down quickly.

It's new, it's cool, it's not your daddy's DAW.
It's an underdog.
People like to feel they are personally involved with a product and are shaping it's development.
i know a guy who says it's the best.

- See viral marketing 101 for more details

It's 60 bucks and it crashes a lot less than PT. - but what doesn't?
