You can put a compressor/limiter on the first insert of the master fader and see what the levels are in the plugin.

That, or put your master fader at -0 and see the real level Having said that, what I do is insert an EQ plugin(FabFilter ProQ 2 here) and keep it on the screen at all times(I run 3 screens here). Its set for a steep hi-pass, but also shows a spectral display and has nice metering on it As you learn more, you will likely come to realize(as I have) that its really easy to hit the master too hard. My new solution is to insert the TRIM plugin on all AUDIO and INSTRUMENT tracks with a -10 setting. As soon as I finish tracking(when slamming the master is not so important), I enable all the TRIM plugins(they are in my session templates but bypassed) and that usually solves any master clipping

well I been trying to figure this out and i'm not going to get all hung up on it as long as I don't hear distortion I guess i'm doing good.I have been recording in the green and things have been going good.
When you raise the master fader it raises the level in the channel as far as I can see...Ill post the video that got me thinking about this so you guys can check out if you want to set up like this guy.Not sure if he has it right either

maybe the best way to check is create a stereo audio track put it in record and run all the channels to it and turn on pre fader mode
