pro tools stops mid recording

while recording, Protools powers down out of no where and says "protools timed out while trying to stop." what is the cause of this? I am using a windows 10 laptop 8gb 64 bit and focusrite red scarlet solo interface and MXL Herritage mic

How big is your session drive and is it at least a 7200 rpm drive? It is also a good idea to record to a drive other than the one where Pro Tools is installed.
What CPU is in your laptop? Does your laptop have a dedicated graphics processor or is it using the CPU? Low system resources sound like the cause of your issues.
