Default Plug-in that is like Distressor?

I have a couple associates who swear by the Distressor(s). What plugs are available that will do something similar to what they do in the realm of, say, compression on vocals or bass, or perhaps on the drum overheads, and do you find occasion to use them on the master fader or in mastering?

Having got to know Smack! it's actually pretty good on certain things but absolutely terrible on others. It kills the low end on some material and can have other unpredictable side effects. However, it is the closest plug to a distressor I agree and on some material will do a nice job.

Smack is the closest thing to a Distressor IMHO.

Although I never bought smack and I own 2 Distressors.

Buy Hardware if you can.

Good Luck.

There's a hardware based plug-in called the EL8 by Empirical Labs. It sounds EXACTLY like a Distressor

I'm a plug-in maniac - but I swear I'm actually considering buying a couple distressors after working with a couple on a session a little while ago. Even my little electronic music brain was able to get a super sweet sound with them on a variety of tracks - Vox/Bass/Drums/Synths... was really fun!

ITB have to agree that I use smack and the omnipressor the same way, FWIW...
