Default Getting Pro Tools to recognize USB-MIDI Interface - Setup

EDIT: Changed MIDI cable hookup path and troubleshooting.

Hi all,

I am trying to get MIDI working, and having little success. Hoping one of you experts can see what my issue is.

I have a Motu 16a interface, so no MIDI on it. I purchased a MIDI USB Controller like THIS and got it plugged into a Roland XP-60 keyboard. No matter what I do, no MIDI signal is recognized in Pro Tools.

Troubleshooting - 3/13/19
I downloaded MIDI Monitor software and it is able to see the USB MIDI input, and when I hit a key on the Roland, it "sees" the trigger on Channel 1. This suggests that the issue is just in PT somewhere?

Also, in Setup => Peripherals, the MIDI Controller I have set up only allows me to set Channel 8. There is no other option, is this ok??

MIDI Connection:
  • MIDI IN to ROLAND MIDI OUT
  • MIDI OUT to ROLAND IN
  • USB connected direct to iMac USB

Pro Tools Setup

1. Setup => MIDI => MIDI Input Devices
Made sure the USB input was seen. As image show, it's being seen.
IMAGE

2. Setup => Peripherals
Set it up as a HUI MIDI interface.
  • Receive From = "USB Midi"
  • Send To = "USB Midi"
  • # Cg's = "8"
IMAGE

3. Setup => MIDI => MIDI Studio => Show MIDI Devices
Can see "USB Midi" in the recognized devices
IMAGE

4. Created an Instrument Track
Set the Instrument Input to "ALL" and listen to USB Midi on channel 8
Added a Virtual Instrument track

Result

But, when I test on the Roland keyboard, nothing is seen. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

System Setup
Pro Tools 12 (2018.12.0)
iMac Pro - 2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7
Mac OS 10.11.6
Motu 16a Interface

Hey

Swap the midi cables to the Roland so IN goes to OUT and OUT to IN as per this text here in the picture and see if anything changes

When you get that sorted out download the free MIDI monitor utility called snoize. It's great for helping to diagnose MIDI issues as it takes the daw out of the loop.

So, follow up. I downloaded MIDI Monitor as suggested, and it can see MIDI coming in on channel 1. Still, nothing in Pro Tools.

What might I have missed?

Have you corrected the Connections as in post #2?

Have you put the Instrument or MIDI track into RECORD?

Since in the OP 'no MIDI is heard' and there's no mention of audio cables so far, have you connected the audio I/O of the XP-60 to your MOTU audio interface - MIDI doesn't carry audio. In Audio MIDI Setup, create a device Roland XP-60 and connect it to the in/out of the USB interface. Also in one of your pics you show setting up a peripheral? Not what you want for this keyboard. That's for control surfaces. Make sure the MIDI device in AMS is enabled as an input device in PT MIDI Setup after you have the correct connections and a session loaded.

Also, PT has midnam definitions for the XP-50 and XP-80 which might be usable if you want to use patch lists. Get it working first then maybe try the patch lists.

i saw this on the website link .. the OP says bought one Like THis .. but maybe not this exact one .. as it says this is a USB 2.0 device and is NOT compatible with USB 3.0 devices .. but since he sees midi, i would now assume whoch has been stated .. connect the Audio from Keys into PT so you can record it ...

the next question .. Latency when playing the keyboard .. i say, if you have ever played a real piano - lets even say an older piano .. there is a slight latency (for lack of better analog term) from when you hit the keys to when you hear the sound .. the machanics of pushing the Lever !! so it does not bother me too much, what does bother me is hearing / feeling the banging of the plastic keys !!! my pet peave !!!

Buffer Settings are directly related to this latency !! if this is known by OP, no worries, please just disregard it .. not sure of level of experience

this got me a good laugh today .. gotta love it .. "HUD MIDI interface" .. it is HUI if anyone did NOT know this already - HUD is just funny !! hahah

HUD = Head Up Display as in one of my Porsches that displays info on the windscreen i.e HUD
