Default MIDI Controller and Synth Module

Hi all,

I'm trying to control a desktop DSI Mopho with a 4th Gen M-Audio Oxygen in Pro-Tools 11 and a Digi 003. Currently, the Oxygen is connected to my computer via USB and the Mopho's MIDI In is connected to the 003 Midi out 2.

I set up a MIDI track in PT and I can record MIDI data from the Oxygen with no issue. I can then route that MIDI info to the Mopho and listen to playback through an Aux In with no problem.

However, what I can't do, is play the keyboard and listen to the sound of the Mopho live in real time.

Is there a setting that I'm missing - I've tried tweaking pretty much every MIDI setting I could find in Pro Tools. Basically, there is no issue sending and recording the MIDI info - just no real time playback.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi

Have you rec enabled the audio track that picked up the midi track/signal as you need to do this in order to hear anything. If you have HD PT you can use the green "i" and have input monitoring aswell to not rec enable the audio tracks.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was actually using an aux track to monitor the sound of the synth for the time being. Essentially, I would hit record on the MIDI track, record a line (but not hearing anything I was playing) and then, without changing any settings, if i played back what I recorded, the MIDI line would play through the Mopho on the aux track.

I did also try with an audio track set to record but that didn't work either.

Try using an INSTRUMENT track as those are designed for just this scenario. It will take in midi from your controller, which can also feed out TO the module, and you connect the module's audio output(s) to your interface, and set the input on the INSTRUMENT track to those input sources

This unfortunately did not work either. Strangely enough, both set ups worked on the first try when I would just noodle on the keyboard but then, after I hit play and then played the keyboard, everything just stopped working completely - with both set ups (instrument track and aux track).

I think this might help.

Setup > Preferences > MIDI tab > Default Thru Instrument = Follows First Selected

Now you should be able to trigger the Mopho with your Oxygen whenever the associated MIDI or Instrument track is selected, regardless of the status of the track. This also works regardless of whether the transport is active.

Hey, thanks for the response but that was already my current selection. I found another thread where someone else had what seems to be the exact issue that I'm having but no solution unfortunately: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=345481.

So i keep on trying different things - I have an M-Audio MIDISport 4x4 with some other gear hooked up to it. I can control that gear from my Oxygen with no problem. It's only the 2 synths hooked up to the MIDI outs from my 003 that don't work properly. They both play recorded MIDI back no problem - I just can't monitor my playing in realtime.

I think I'm going to lose it...

May I make a suggestion? Why not get either another 4x4 MIDI interface or just get an 8x8 and run everything through that?

That's probably a better solution than losing it and taking a hammer to my 003, however, I would to use the MIDI ports I already have instead of spending more money and taking up more precious space.

Seeing as it is working fin through the MIDI Sport, I'm think that there has to be one small button on the 003 that I'm missing that will shift the settings...
