Default Will not record

I have the M-audio fast track package and everything appears to be working properly. I go in and create a new track. Select mono, then audio. I am recording a guitar. When i go to the mix board i select plug in 2. Plugin 1 does nothing for some reason. I hear the guitar through my output speakers, set the levels, and enable it to record.
I go back to the main screen, click record and it starts flashing. Nothing shows up in the wave lengths. Like it doesnt even see the instrument playing. Whats going on?
