Default HD Omni Firmware Stuck at 78.44%

Just wanted to share the info with the community: today I have (finally) decided to upgrade the firmware of my Omni HD interface and guess what? As the title of this thread says: the firmware update got stuck at 78.44%! I was waiting for more than two hours and nothing. And I thought to myself "well now I am really in deep doodoo". Of course do NOT ask me why I tried to upgrade in the first place...let's just say that "do not try and fix things that aren't broken" is not my motto. Anyhooooo I have rebooted the Omni and the Mac. Obviously the Omni appeared dead. And when I ran DigiTest the program displayed an error over and over again. Then I disconnected the DigiLink cable and reconnected it and much to my surprise the program actually identified the Omni (albeit with FW ver 1.1 and still no response from Omni) and I did a re-flash and this time everything went by OK and the Omni is ........... alive!!!

So although I have absolutely no questions here I just wanted to share this info and congratulate Avid for (what I speculate here) making a failsafe boot for the Omni in case it can't boot up properly. I have seen this "emergency kernel bootup" being implemented with some vendors, but I can tell you there are only a handful. So ... thanks Avid for this. You have saved me from the troublesome writing an e-mail, requesting a RMA, packing the Omni, sending the Omni, paying for repairs, etc.

You also have the option on the Omni itself to reset it to factory specs. That might be something to try in the future if some issue comes up.

This may or may not apply to the Omni, but...

In all of the equipment I have worked with that had the option, all the "factory reset" does is set user-configurable items back to the settings that were in place when the unit was shipped.

Typically, a "factory reset" will not restore the factory firmware.

Of course it might be worth a try, and I can't think of any reason why it could make things worse.

I don't remember the exact details, but I seem to recall there being an issue with updating the Omni's firmware with certain HDN or TDM cards and certain Pro Tools versions. Folks might want to do a search here on the DUC regarding this before doing a firmware update...

Just rockin'...what more is there?

My opinion on firmware is that the manufacturers should go back to the DIP header style chips. This way if your interface gets bricked you can have a field replaceable chip airmailed and be back up in a day. Without round trip shipping and a repair bill.

This applies to a lot of devices not just expensive interfaces.

are you running the firmware update on an older (non qualified mac pro)? and what is the card the omni is connected to?

This was the reason stated by avid for not qualifying hdx for the older mac pros as the firmware updates could not function properly.

I'm on MacPro 4,1 (early 2009 model). This model is qualified by Avid. I'm on OSX 10.8.2, HDX2 system, PT 10.3.4.

Ok so its not that then

Any thing else you can think of?

Have you tried unplugging al usb, firewire, network, and thunderbolt devices while the firmware installs?

Yes; I have even restarted the OS before I launched the update. So a clean re-boot, opened the app, clicked the "update now" button and didn't even touch the mouse during the process.

Anyway: the important thing is that the Omni is working okay now on 2.10. Phew!
