The nMP comes across as a much faster machine in nearly every regard. It's not just the CPU, it's largely the lightning fast pci-e drive and quicker memory.
+1 I agree There's a lot more going on with the nMP. It's a lot faster than my previous 6 core late 2012 MP in many ways just as you mentioned. Also in my previous MP I had 32GB ram, 2 SSD in raid, all the same software and hardware and it was fast but it doesn't keep up with my nMP. I also noticed the nMP performs better than the old MP on OS's Mavericks and Yosemite. Yosemite has definatly improved performance overall than Mavericks. I also see better CPU performance in PT and games like Tomb Raider 2013 which has a tremendous bump in performance on Yosemite vs Mavericks. I couldn't be more pleased!

So is the takeaway here that Geekbench scores are not predictive of real world PT performance? I'm about to buy something, if I knew what to buy. Tricked out 12 core old Mac Pro, or 6 core nMP. 12 core nMP too rich for my blood.

That is correct. Same thing with the new Mac Pro Quad core vs the quad core Imacs. Similar geekbench, but much better with the new Mac pro.

The new Mac Pro 6 core would be a better choice for you, based on all these experiences.

Thanks.
Now, what is Geekbench measuring, if not real world performance?
