Default 5.1 & PT stereo folddown

hello,
so far it has been my experience that protools does NOT create a very good folddown to a 2channel mix from 5.1 surround... or maybe i don't create a very good folddown...
anyways

in a 5.1 mix session with fx, vo, and music, i put sends on the appropriate tracks to go to the 2 channel master. i've been trying several different i/o paths and subpaths... but it seems that at the 2channel master, multichannel tracks drop about 3db, while the mono tracks stay at the same level.

i am thinking that the best thing to do is have the session mixed in stereo - then a big old 'save as' and mix in 5.1.

hopefully i have clearly explained my plight...

am i missing something? what are you guys doing for a 2 channel mix from 5.1 in the same session?

thanks!

JA

I mix in 5.1, bounce, mix down to stereo... sends 'n' stuff just give me probs... I import the 5.1 material and set up 5 mono audio tracks. I like to do it this way so I can have more control over blend of tracks... not sure if its a good way to do it... I guess someone else with more experience could say...

i typcially mix in one format, save as, then mix in the other. (around here, its usually stereo first then surround...)

i guess if you were trying to deliver both at the same time, and were still making lots of changes, it would be hard to save as... since you'd have to duplicate changes. but for me, we usually finish the mix, then i just have to re-pan and re-bus, so its not a big deal.
