Default Pt9 + motu 2408 mk3

Hi folks,

I have a motu PCIe-424 card with 2 motu 2408mk3's plugged in.

Currently I use this setup:
2408-1: Bank A ADAT 8x8 i/o; Bank B ADAT 8x8 i/o; Bank C Analog 1-8 i/o
2408-2: Bank A ADAT 8 IN (from PreSonus D8); Bank B ADAT 8 IN (from 2nd Presonus D8); Bank C Analogue 1-8 i/o

Now my problem is that I can access the first 2408 analog i/o no problem, but I cannot access the second one. I set up the I/O table to show Bank A ADAT; Bank B ADAT; Bank C Analog on both 2408s, the settings are fine in AudioMIDI, I can see signal just fine on the 2nd 2408 hardware meters, but nothing comes to PT. Both units work fine in the exact same configuration withing Digital Performer and Cubase.

Is there some issues with PT not seeing the analog inputs on bank C with 2 2408s?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Not sure PT 9 supports aggregate I/O ? did you try talking to MOTU tech support? they may be able to help.
Thank you.

Obviously, Protools only recognizes 32 i/o, so thus a problem with the second 24 channels on a single interface verse two audio interfaces with 16 and 16 type of situation.

I simply turn off the second 2408mk3 and just go with 24 i/o and haven't had any issues this way and I do a lot of tracking. Protools may be subject to crashing with the second 2408 on (at least in my studio it does) and I'm also not able to access the session window with the second 2408mk3 on or protools will crash.

Although, I have found success in the PCI-424 setup window by turning off banks A and B of the second 2408 and just using bank C for the spdif.
This therefore equals the 32 i/o, but again even with this if I open the session window protools will crash immediately.
I posted something about this not long ago referring to the "segmentation error" i was getting with the second 2408mk3.
Hope this helps a little.

Just to prevent misleading information...

PT9 does in fact support aggregate I/O on OSX.

I have been using PT LE for a few years and recently upgraded to version 8. Of course, all PT LE versions were tied to Digi/AVID hardware in order to run but now that PT 9 is out, I believe 3rd party hardware is usable.

I have a few questions prior to making the leap to PT 9 about using the MOTU 2408 with it. I know that the MOTU unit ships with a PCI card that has multiple FW I/O but when reading the manual, I do not understand how this works vs. the built in FW ports on the Mac.

What I want to do is go directly from my Mackie TT24 digital board using the ADAT I/O to the MOTU 2408 and then to the Mac. Since the set up shows hooking up the MOTU to one of the FW ports on the PCI card, can someone explain why this is required vs. the built in FW?

Secondly, do all 24 digital tracks then appear independently in PT 9 through the single connection?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Cheers,
Paul

According to MOTU, you cannot connect the 2408 directly to a computer via FireWire. While it uses the same cable, it seems they use their own proprietary protocol. So, it won't communicate with a regular FW port.

That being said, I don't see any reason why Pro Tools 9 shouldn't recognize the 2408 provided you have it connected to an installed 424 card. You should see all available channels provided they don't exceed the Pro Tools max (32 I/O).

Welp it doesnt. Currently I have:
2408-1 (424 port3) Bank A: Analogue 1-8, Bank B: ADAT, Bank C: ADAT
2408-2 (424 port4) Bank A: Analogue 1-8, Bank B: ADAT, Bank C: ADAT

and my IO in PT9 shows:

Analog 1-8 (properly mapping to 2408-1 Bank A)
ADAT B 1-8 (properly mapping to 2408-1 Bank B)
ADAT C 1-8 (properly mapping to 2408-1 Bank C)
then it doesnt show analog 1-8 for 2408-2 or find any signal and it goes on like such:
2408-2 ADAT A 1-8 (Goes noplace no signal reaches here)
2408-2 ADAT B 1-8 (nothing)
2408-2 ADAT C 1-8 (nothing)

Interestingly the input listings on the I/O panel are wrong too. They show analog 1-8 then bank B shows up where bank C should be of the first motu... its a big clusterf*ck lol

And the reason I am posting here and not submitting a support ticket is because I installed PT9 and got too busy to check out details with the 30 days you get to have free support... even if its a PT issue... freaking ridiculous that you cant submit a bug or have an issue looked at without buying it even when its not fault of mine. Personally if PT9 CLAIMS to work with Motu 2408MK3 and yet it doesnt, then they should have some avenue for me to communicate the problems. And they expect me to upgrade to pt10???? ROFLMAO yea right. Bad corporate policy.

you SHOULD find channels 1-8 on analogue/adat bank A on the second unit work, but that nothing else does.... and you may need to make sure the units are plugged in to ports 1&2 on the PCI424 , in order.... and that the I/O path options are all active and switched to Analogue/ADAT B and C, not the SPDIF,

pt 9 has a maximum I/O LIMIT OF 32 channels, and because of the way it is implemented, you cannot choose WHICH 32 channels you want to use

so it should work fine for A,B, C on unit 1, and bank A of unit 2, but nothing else....

is unit 2 showing up and indicating signal in Cuemix?
