Default Move clip to stereo track - panning is wrong - FEATURE REQUEST

Hi
I think this has been a pain in the ass for a very long time:
Often when you move 2 mono clips to a stereo track, the panning of the left channel remains in centre, while the right channel moves to right, as you'd want it to be.

When you go the other way (stereo to 2 mono tracks) the panning changes to both centred with is what you'd expect. I often do this in film post to edit one of the channels.
But when you move them back to a stereo track, panning is messed up, mostly on the left channel only. This is very annoying and causes mistakes and loss of time.

It also happens when you drag in a stereo file from finder/workspace and put it accidentally on two mono tracks. You'd want to be able to move it to a stereo track without the panning being messed up.

It could be very useful if there was a setting in prefs that would default to the panning you'd mostly expect. Centre for mono channels, L/R for stereo channels.

sort of on topic, but the ability to go back and forth between dual mono and stereo is great. I use it all the time to switch panning on a stereo sound, or to adjust out of whack balance/eq for all kinds of stuff

Yeah indeed but then you would want the behaviour to be consistent right?
Alwas keep the stereo panning or always go to centre,
not one channel centred and the other panned!

Or is this behaviour caused by something else that I am missing or doing wrong?

Turn off copy automation with clips and that won’t happen.

Thanks for your reply, yes but then you have to remember to put that back on...
Which again may lead to even bigger mistakes.

Why should it pan one channel centered and the other correctly? It seems inconsistent even with 'automation follows edit' enabled it still treats the left and right channel differently.
Just looking for best possible efficiency...

Avid have known about this for years.

They don't give a crap about these minor bugs
