Default Pro tools cant upgrade pcie cards. (aae-1167)

Hello, and thanks for letting me in!
I have a huge problem which needs to be solved ASAP. About a week ago we bought a new machine, iMac 2019 with Catalina on it. Yesterday I connected my Magma Chassi with Pro Tools HDX on it to my Mac, after that I opened Pro Tools and got a message saying that the HDX drivers needs to upgrade. I clicked OK and let Pro Tools upgrade the cards. After 10 minutes, I got a message with a (-1167 failcode). What is the problem? The HDX does work with Logic with no problems and my old MacBook Pro which handles the upgrade fine. I have also run Digitest to ensure that the cards work properly. I have attached some screenshots. Help!

I had a similar problem with my sonnet chassis and hdx cards on my 2019 iMac. I ended up using an older MacBook Pro that I loaded protools on with the sonnet chassis to do the update on. For some reason the iMac wouldn’t do the update with the sonnet. Worked fine on the iMac after the update though.

Tnx! I used my old MacBook Pro and tried to update the cards that way with PT. Unfortunately the same problem occurred with the MacBook, it freezes and can’t update. I also switched slots for the cards in the chassi, no luck!

HDX firmware update on chassis has always been problematic, easier to put it inside host computer while updating.

Should work however, if every piece of hardware and software are compatible. So lets start with basic specs...

Hello. Just did some troubleshooting and came to this conclusion.
I tried to update my PT software to 2020.5 on my other device (MBP which the HDX worked on earlier), and this problem (AAE-1167) started to appear once again. I have used my HDX card with this machine for the latest 6 years w/o any problems at all. So, could it be a bug inside 2020.5?
My basic specs are these.
PT Ultimate 2020.5
Pro Tools HDX with Magma Chassi, connected through thunderbolt
macOS Catalina
iMac 2019 5K

Which chassis model to be exact? Are you 100% sure it is fully compatible with Catalina?

Hello again.
I use a Magma EB3T, which for some reason also stopped working on my Mojave machine when I updated to PT 2020.5 (the MBP). It should be compatible with all macOS over Yosemite.

Yes, I’m 100% sure it is compatible since it works on Logic Pro X with zero problems. I think that I have isolated the problems to the PT software since it doesn’t works on any machine with 2020.5 software. I’ve tried with both Mojave and Catalina, but once again since the 2020.5 update, they both fail to upgrade my PCIe cards.

I think the problem may be with the TB3 ports, which your iMac has.

Cannot find the document right now, but somewhere in the Knowledge Base they say that TB3 chassis are not supported, unless the connection card is replaced with TB2 card which in your case is not feasible as the host computer has TB3.

Yes, I understand what you mean, but I have a dongle from TB2 to 3 and my MBP which still uses TB 2 doesn’t work either. That can’t be the problem.
