Default Key Detector?

Is there any type of plug in out there that can detect the key of a song?

your ear?

LOL. I couldnt resist!

maybe autotune in a roundabout way can help you if you analyze the melody in the vocal line using graphic mode.

hahahaha thanks, I wish my ear was that good. I can hear if somethings out of key. But when it comes to narrowing down to the exactly key to a song I'm just not that good. even when I ask a band there most times a little lost with the answer, and most guitar players and bass players come up with different answers. So I just thought with all the amazing tools we have these days ie: Autotune, Drumagog and Melodyne that something such as this would be within reach.

You have already answered your question..... Melodyne is the Key detector, whatever monophonic source (vocal, guitar solo.. even Bass) imported to melodyne will give you the Key of the song.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've only demoed melodyne in the past, I think I now have my reason to purchase.

I abolsutely love this website to find the keys of songs: https://www.getsongkey.com. There are millions of Song Keys for musicians and DJs. Circle of fifths and camelot wheel for harmonic mixing. As a DJ myself it's saved me a ton of time.

Hornet SongKey MK3 is good and very cheap (on sale for 2.99 Euros right now. Usually 12.99).

Chroma from Bluelab isn't quite a key detector but it is pretty cool and gives good information about notes and chords. Only US$30.
