Dealing with big video files
Hey, there!
I have a PT11 (not the HD version) on my Dell i7 3740QM/Quad @2,70GHz /16GB/SSD -Laptop @Win7 64bit. I currently have a project with two big video files (5GB and 20GB) on the video track. Well the project have a huge number of audio clips (~3000) too. If I do not link the video files during the loading of a session, PT behaves normal. If I load/link the video files, PT goes unstable after a short while. So after 5-6 plays and stops PT starts to freeze and then not respond any more. The CPU/HDD/RAM monitor in PT says, there is nothing to do. But in windows system monitor I see, that the video engine load far more resources as the PT itself... I try now to shrink the bitrate an the size (Full HD-> HD) of those video in a Premiere Pro and then to replace the original video files. BUT maybe there is a better solution? What do you mean? (Setting draft quality or smaller size at video window didn't help) Cheers, Andreas

Re: Dealing with big video files
Is this a laptop? Is everything on the same drive(the system drive)? That would probably be the show stopper. AFAIK, most people stream video from a separate drive(but I'm not the expert on this).

Re: Dealing with big video files
My video files are usually 10gb or more, HD at 50fps, but they are DNxHD 36. If you are using MP4/h264 video files this may be the problem because they take processing resources to decode and play, and PT is not so happy with those. As albee said, you should be running the video off a separate drive.

Re: Dealing with big video files
^^^ This. Number one question is what codec you're using on the videos?

Re: Dealing with big video files
Hey there! Thanks for your replies!
Which codec it the lightest one for PT? @Wizzoboy: may you can say me, what profile do you use to export DNxHD 36 from Adobe Premiere CC (if you use it, like I do). If I use this ... Quote:
Just realized that 20GB file is a DNxHD (AVdn) video file... My codec information: Old (BIG) files 20GB: DNxHD (AVdn) FullHD 1080p 25p 5GB: H264 MPEG4 AVC part10 avc1 FullHD 1080p 25p New (SMALL) video files: 1,35GB H264 MPEG4 AVC part10 avc1 HD 720p 25p (Premiere export from 20GB file) 1,3GB H264 MPEG4 AVC part10 avc1 HD 720p 25p (Premiere export from 5GB file) The PT11 project was on an external WD 5TB USB3 hdd drive (Read: 98 Mb/s, Write: 97 Mb/s) , then on an internal 2nd extra hdd data drive (Read: 86 Mb/s, Write: 75 Mb/s) in my laptop. The boot (1st one) drive is an ssd drive (Read: 562 Mb/s, Write: 530 Mb/s). I'll do the speed tests for those both drives now. Cheers, Andreas

Re: Dealing with big video files
Hello Andreas. I use Davinci Resolve for editing. Most of my footage is MP4 1080 50p at 35Mbps. I render out a Quicktime DNxHD 36 8bit at 50fps for PT. No MXF. The DNxHD file size is just over double that of the original MP4. So, for example a file of 252mb becomes 558mb. PT is very happy with this format. I steam video off a dedicated internal HDD.
I notice that your HDD read/write speeds are quite low. Make sure the discs' speed is 7200rpm and not 5400.
