Mine is near it's last legs so I too am looking at the I7 builds. I've had a very nice Quadzilla running all this time (up 24x7 except while on vacation for weeks out of town)...so I'm looking forward (with some minor trepidation) to building the new I7 with the same longevity.

(As said...) the X58A UD3R has 10 internal SATA ports and 2 external or eSATA.
eSATA drives have their own power supply.

one more thing.. lol

do you also use windows 7 with pro tools? has it worked for you in comparison to how my computer should perform?
I'll take a shot at some of this...

1. Triple channel is the way i7 9xx CPUs work. to get the best memmory preformance you will need to have 3 matching mem sticks. They should be instaled in the same color memmory slots on your motherboard. BTW this has nothing to do with the amount of memmory ProTools can use.

2. Using an SSD for a system drive is fine. Your ProTools software should also be installed on the system drive.
The other hard drive is for Audio Files - so protools sessions should be saved to the audio drive.

3. Windows 7 64bit should work fine with PT 8.0.4

I was going out of date, the i7's are going out of date but with boards like the GA-X58A-UD3R not only do they support core i7s and Windows 7 but also give support to the new Intel 6 Core processors.

By the way, minimoog and a voyager, you are a lucky man.

Thank you for the compliment, it took a few years of scrimping and jumping on some very hot auctions to find what I wanted. So ok, since you had to go there ;-)...let's see if I can get some more Gear envy...

Moog:
Minimoog Model D (recently overhauled and tuned)
Liberation (yup...had one of the early one's and shared the sequential serial number with Tom Coster of Santana...that went in a divorce 18 years ago...this was it's replacement)
Taurus II
Voyager (anniv) w/expansion components (VX-351 and CP-251)
Little Phatty (sig edition)
MF-101, 102, 103, 104Z, 105, 105M
MP-201 just got added this last month

Arp:
2 2600's, one wired for 220 and all original came from the Netherlands, one redone by Phil Cirocco with his new filters, LED's and 1/4 output jacks
Keyboard for the 2600
Odyssey (MK I, had a MK II, but sold that as the MK I has the old filters and was fatter)
1621 Sequencer

Roland:
System 100-101
System 100m (10 modules and the Keyboard)

I'm sure I'm leaving out some other vintage gear, but that's what's lying around in sight...LOL.

I'm definitely going to have to pull the trigger on my build then, as getting in early with a board that will leverage the 6 core later will be best for me (easily scalable). I've got the build all mapped out at NewEgg, just have to put some money aside. Random thoughts of selling vintage gear keep popping up, but I know better ;-)...they've appreciated better than my 401K.
