Connecting midi keyboard

Running pt11.1 on mavericks
i want to connect axiom pro49 to pt any suggestion on the best way
axiom is presently connected via usb and i have connected with
set up / peripherals menu but i was recently told better to just set up thru the track to utlize the keys but i cant seem to get this to work could someone please tell me how to do this with the track parameters

You shouldn't have to go into the peripherals setup, you should be able to plug and play. Did the axiom come with drivers? Are they installed ?

Well atleast. Ake sure that your axiom is found and checked under Settings -> Mid -> Midi Input where you should see the keyboard and the midi channels

PS. There aren't any Mavericks drivers for the Axiom Pro yet but maybe try the way we outlined here and see if that works. It can also be a driver issue and I know a 10.9 driver is on the way.
