Default Control 24 power supply capacitor replacement repair

Hi,

My control 24 started playing up again so i decided to replace the known capacitor that often causes power supply issue, faders moving and leds flickering and noises coming from the monitor section etc.

You need a good soldering iron and you need to keep the tip clean!! and a solder suck for sucking up the old solder when removing the old cap.

Its C20 on the power supply and its a 4.7 microfarad (although a UF seems to be the same thing and i have seen power supplies with either on) 50v 105c temperature rating.

here's the old one i just removed, next to a rizla cigarette papares packet to show the size...

Here's the new one before soldering in. the positive is the one nearest the blue component with the circle on the board! you can tell the negative on the cap as there are lines down the side, and a line of 0's down the side of the cap to indicate the negative connection..

Here's the original one in situ...

Here's a previous post i did regarding checking and cleaning the connections inside, which is also a common cause of issues...

Default Control 24 power supply capacitor replacement repair

So Chris, did this make everything better?

Yes, mu (μ) is the symbol used for micro.

Hi,

So far so good been on 6-7 hours today! you never know as i can be intermittent but yesterday it was unusable.

Yeh the microfarad and UF can be confusing and even a google search was even more confusing!

Default Re: Control 24 power supply capacitor replacement repair

This 'solution' has gotten way too much attention, and I will explain. It is virtually impossible for any power supply failure of any kind to affect only some of the channels. The power supply has busses from which molex connectors feed thru wiring harnesses to the various parts of the controller. Each group of 8 channels (1-8, 9-16, 17-24) have only a single connection to the supply for each of the various voltages needed.

1. If a problem is observed on a group of 8 channels as described above, the problem is a wire harness, and will almost certainly be a dirty or corroded connector pin. Very inexpensive to repair.

2. If the problem exists for all 24 channels, it is almost certainly a PSU failure. The PSU can be easily removed and sent to the manufacturer's rep in the USA for a flat rate repair of $80.

3. Any other scenario, single or pairs of channels, rules out 1) and 2). The scribble displays share certain connections in odd/even pairs, so such a pair malfunctioning could be good news, requiring only a connector cleaning or repair or, in some cases, the replacement of a minor part.

The Utility functions built into the Control 24 are a wonderful aide in finding the quantity and # of malfunctioning displays. No connection to a computer or ProTools is needed. Read the manual if you are not familiar or, just press Utility and keep following the prompts on the scribble strips if they are readable.

Hello,
Our Control|24 started flashing all LED's accompanied by a loud bang from the monitors. Was happening several times a day. I think the main problem was oxidation of molex power connectors at the PS. I first cleaned those but decided to order new caps too ($30 for all). It ran without incident for 2 weeks until I had time to replace the caps. After cap replacement it has run without problem for 30 days @ 12 hours a day.
