Default "001 and soundcard" question, with a twist

Apologies up front for re-asking what I'm sure is an old question. This version might be a bit different.

I'm an old Mac guy, PC buddy me up a year ago w/ PC for PT/001. It died recently and he's re-made it. He likes Win98 and is staying with it (I don't have a preference). He's bringing the PC over today. Here's what he emailed me:

"I made a bad decision on the MOBO. In order to get USB 2, I opted to not get integrated audio/video/lan. Don't know that I consciously made that decision, but that's what happened when said I want USB 2. So, no sound card. No SPDIF out from CDROM to MOBO, if you had it in the first place."

In my previous system I was used to onboard sound in addition to 001. I've searched the DUC and it seems that I can use the 001 as my sole sound interface by installing something called WaveDriver. But on a Win98 machine...I'm not sure what version to use, and of course I have others questions I'll withhold for now.

Anyone care to re-visit this topic? I'd love use 001 only, had rough time w/ PT and PC sound before.

many thanks in advance.

here's what you need for win98:

i gotta tell you though - XP is so much better than win98, you'd be wise to upgrade...

Many thanks, dB, always enjoy your posts! Will be on XP soon. I fear change and the time it usually takes to get stuff working, hence I'm a procasturbator.
Thanks again!
Mark
