Re: New studio set up
The 13`MacBook M1 I was thinking about, has only 2 ports! Which makes me wonder how this will work with external interface, external HD , connecting to an external larger screen. And no special port for psu.

Re: New studio set up
You'll need to get a thunderbolt dock. Quite a few actually charge the connected computer at the same time (you use the "host" or "90W" thunderbolt connector on the dock.)
So you get the thunderbolt dock and plug it into your power outlet, connect all your stuff to that (external displays, hard drives, audio interfaces, etc.), and then connect the host thunderbolt connector to your laptop (which will then charge your laptop)

Re: New studio set up
Even if it is a "90W" charging dock, you may run out of juice when connecting external drive(s). Buy the most powerful dock/charger you can find.

Re: New studio set up
"Run out of juice". Do you mean only "juice" ref. powering the Mac, or will this also affect signal quality from external devices connected?

Re: New studio set up
If the dock says 90W and laptop needs 100W for charging, your external drive will not power up.

Re: New studio set up
Quote:
The other thunderbolt ports are to spec. The power is not shared between ports, it is just a guarantee of the charging port (Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 spec is 15W for general ports.) So there isn't any worry. If the charging port doesn't provide enough power, it just slow charges (much like on an airplane.) Airplanes only provide 75W. Apple has stayed within power limits for a long time. (other companies, not so much) So there is nothing to worry about.

Re: New studio set up
Yes, it ultimately comes down to power source. You only get what is provided. AND, in this case it depends on the dock: some give priority to the charging port, so if charging port takes "up to 100W" and your power source gives 75%, chances are other ports get zero watts.
