CAD E200 or Octava MC-012
I need an inexpensive mic to track percussion: tambourine, shakers, etc. and also scratch/temp vocals.
I owned an E-200 years ago and really liked it and was thinking about getting another one. Someone recently recommened the Octava. Just curious if anyone has A/B'd them and could make a recommendation as to which would best fit my needs. Are there any other contenders out there in the sub-$300 price range? Any input is welcomed.

Never really A/B'd them, but I like my Oktava 012's. They are a little darker sounding condenser...

Re: CAD E200 or Octava MC-012
I don't know anything about the Oktava, but my old studio partner had a CAD E100 and 200. The 200 is cool because it has the pattern selector... Omni mode for up close vocals with no proximity effect is cool. Otherwise, they sound essentially the same.
You probably remember - very realistic, very true and uncolored. Sometimes too stark... great for rock (they have an edge) and modern jazz (realism)... maybe not the best for soft pop. The last post said the Oktavas are dark, so I guess the difference between would be big. Sorry, I can't compare them. For drums they're great and detailed, but I now have Shure KSM 32s and they're incredible on drums. For the money though, the E100 was amazing. |

Buy a pair of MC012's. You'll always find a use for them.
Get the E-200, great mic also. The CAD will be a bit brighter. The Oktavas will be very "full". YMMV At the price, have all three. Regards, Haigbabe

Re: CAD E200 or Octava MC-012
hello, we've a cad m179 and are very pleased with it. soem time ago a friend engineer came with 2 actavia mic's. i can't remember which ones. black condeser types. the cad was performing significant better. i don't know the price of the e-200 but the price of the m179 and an e-350 was the same. although we have neumann mic's we use the cad quite often.
